Lubetkin Prize 2006
Red Location Museum of Struggle awarded another prestigious prize.
The prize, in memory of Berthold Lubetkin (1901-1990), was awarded by daughter Sasha to winners Noero Wolff Architects at London’s Hilton Hotel on the 23rd June 2006. The award, a unique cast concrete plaque, was based on Lubetkin’s design of the penguin pool at London Zoo which is he’s best known work.
Speaking about the building, the judges said, “All museums concern memory & history. It was therefore all the more impressive to encounter one in which particular histories & memories have evoked an extraordinarily powerful architectural idea. This is the most evocative of locations & symbology for a museum of apartheid and its struggles. The Red Location Museum brilliantly rises to the challenge, using architectural skill of the highest order to produce an unforgettable experience that is intellectually moving.”
